STEMapalooa 2010

For the 3rd year in a row, GK-12 Residents demonstrated hands-on inquiry-based "wow" activities to K-12 students, parents, teachers, college students and educators, and industry members who attended the 3nd annual STEMapalooza. The event was hosted at the Colorado Convention Center on October 8th & 9th, 2010, with attendance totaling almost 11,000 people! A plethora of exhibitors from around the state of Colorado joined efforts in promoting the awareness and enthusiasm of STEM disciplines, as wells as fostering discussions and forums for future STEM endeavors. In addition to the GK-12 Transforming Experiences Residents, the GK-12 booth also hosted fellows from the CU Boulder Project EXTREMES and the University of Wyoming Science Posse. Project EXTREMES added to the experience with an investigation into the pine beetle epidemic. Their fellows provided several "tree cookies" where students could count the tree rings and notice where the rings were wider or closer together. Through this, students asked questions and were engaged with one of the issues Colorado is facing. The Science Posse also provided fantastic activities including interactive fractals, run-off and pollution, and freezing bubbles with dry ice. Finally, the UC Denver Residents continued to foster discussions and interest by providing the following activities: the game of Nim Challenge, Secret codes - cryptography, Sound waves and non-Newtonian fluid, the Perplexing Pressure of balloons, Vehicle Aerodynamics, UV Beads, magic card tricks, and Polyomino Tiling.
